Radio Shack Metal Detector

discovery 2200
Use this professional-style metal detector to find buried treasure of your own! Discrimination and notch controls let you minimize response to items like pull tabs, while boosting indications to potentially valuable objects. Plus, the LCD readout indicates the type of metal being detected.
Locates coins and many other metal objects for depths up to 9 inches
8″ waterproof search coil is submersible in fresh or salt water
Listen to speaker or plug your headphones into the 1/4″ jack to hear subtle responses more easily
Automatic ground balance adjustment–no need to change settings when you change search areas
Low-battery indicator
Adjustable shaft with armrest
Extra-lightweight materials for longer hunting time

“I bought this device for one purpose and only have used it for that purpose – and it performed wonderfully. I lost my wedding ring when I was roto-tilling my garden – had no clue where exactly I lost it. So, I looked up prices of metal detectors and decided this would be a good value. 20 minutes after we got it set up, we had found the ring in the middle of the garden, under about 2 inches of dirt. Thanks, Discovery 2200″

“So seldom does something perform up to ones expectations or the hype of advertisement-but this thing really works! I especially like the discriminating function. The instructions are clear and concise and set-up is a breeze.”

discovery 1100
Adjustable tones of this discriminating metal detector give you a special sound for different types of metal, such as gold, or nickels and other coins. One mode rejects most trash items, while another detects all metals including iron objects that would normally be rejected in the discrimination modes.
Metal detector with 3-tone target identification lets you choose what you want to find
Display shows coin depth, up to 6″
3-tone target identification
Comfort hand grip
Squelch-Tech™ noise reduction circuitry
Touch pad with all-digital controls
Automatic ground balance adjustment
1/4″ headphone jack (headphone not included)
Interchangeable coil system
7″ open-face waterproof search coil
Adjustable, padded arm rest
Adjustable aluminum stem

“I couldn’t believe that I could get a great quality metal detector at such a low price! Most others of this quality cost thousands. In one short day, I found tons of things up to 8 inches deep in just my backyard”

“Just after receiving this metal detector, I tried it out in my backyard. In a few short minutes, I had found a sterling silver ring and a dime seven inches in the ground! I couldn’t believe that it found things as small as dimes and rings and as deep as seven inches”

Have you looked at any other reviews, read about the Bounty Hunter Metal Detectors orTesoro Metal Detectors or others using the right side menu.
“I’ve been detecting for 30+ years, mostly with White’s and Garrett machines. This Nautilus DMC IIBa is the deepest, best metal detector I have ever found! It found a steel b.b. at 6″ with no trouble, two lead bullets and 4 wheat cents, all of which I had missed with the Garrett 2500, and targets were popping up everywhere. This is a very good machine for coin hunting, and I believe it will be even better for relics. It hits hard and deep in both discriminate (silver dime, clads and even nickels at 12″–which I never believed possible). It hits in discriminate mode deeper than all metal mode. How neat is that? I now Believe! No meter necessary.”

“After hunting with a friend that owns a 20 year old Naut, and my having a Minelab Explorer, there is humiliation on my part. Let’s put technology in the trash can on this one. The old Naut out-performs incredibly. And the Naut owner had never been to this site before, but the Minelab had hunted it about 50 times. Simpler just may be better.”

DMC-IIB
The High powered, 44 Volt DMC-IIB is a dual mode detector for use in highly mineralized soil where maximum performance is required in all-metal and discrimination modes. Features 2 modes: Ground Reject Discriminate mode and VLF Ground Balance. Discrimination, ground balance, discrimination sensitivity control, ground balance sensitivity control, turning control.

The Nautilus DMC IIB is designed for the serious detectorist by a man who actually uses what he engineers. Whether is be a Civil War campsite, a Revolutionary War fort, an 18th century cellar hole or an early picnic grove. Nautilus DMC series metal detectors continue to give unmatched performance.

Features:
Search modes: Ground Reject Discriminate (motion), Non-Motion Discrimination, Non-Motion Ground Balance
Controls: Discrimination 8 to 1 Vernier Dial, Ground Balance 8 to 1 Vernier Dial, Discrimination Sensitivity, Ground Balance Sensitivity, Tuning, Power, and 2X Balance
Switches: on/off, Mode, Auto-Tune, Head Balance and P.B. Tune
Audio: Ground reject Discrimination = 950 HZ, Non-Motion Discriminate and Non-Motion Ground Balance = 240 HZ
Operating Frequency: 14 KHZ
Power Output: Variable
Search Heads: 8″ Standard, Optional: 6″, 10″ & 15″. Heads are Field interchangeable on same models.
Power Pack: Four (4) 9 volt Transistor Batteries, Optional: Rechargeable Battery System
Physical Configurations: Telescopic Handle in “S” or “U” choice, Grey Enclosure, Padded Headphones.
Weight: 4.3 to 4.5 lbs

“Look how old the Nautilus technology is (About 20 years give or take a little). Boy they were and still are way ahead of their time. They still blow away the competition. There is absolutely no comparison in the depth department and the Nautilus is also more sensitive to smaller targets.
The circuitry of the DMC2′s is more adjustable and relays more signal information to the user than any other detector. Also if you know how to use the Nautilus I believe it is just as good in iron as a Tesoro, especially if you use a 6 or 8 inch coil. (They have a great selection of coils – 6″,8″,10″,&15″) I own a T2 and several Tesoro’s and they will get targets that my Nautilus misses but my Nautilus gets a lot more targets behind the T2 and Tejon.
If I had to have one detector it would be a Nautilus DMC 2B hands down. For the price Nautilus sells for they are by far the absolute best bargain in detectors out there (I see used ones often in the 300.00 range). I have dug buttons close to 20″ in good sandy soil with the 2B using a 10″ coil — none of my other detectors have ever come close to that!! In my book NAUTILUS RULES”

“It’s funny how metal detecters reviews are across the board as far as ratings go. For the detectorist who takes the time to learn the nuances of the IIb, it is far superior to any machine on the market for depth and discrimination. Is it a turn on and detect machine like the Tejon or many others? Of course not. It has to be set up properly for the conditions one is hunting in. It is a “professional metal detector.” While I am no expert with the IIb yet, I have enough experience with it to get more depth from it than any Tejon or Explorer could hope for. If one just reads and learns JBird’s tips, and then takes the time to put them into practice, the IIb will achieve results far above anything on the market. But I do love to see people give up on this machine. It just means more relics and old coins for us dedicated users. Leave the clad to the other machines.”

Minelab x Terra 70

The Minelab X-TERRA 70 Metal Detector is the flagship of the Minelab X-Terra Series and offers the flexibility of three frequency coil options to convert the machine to hunt Relics, Coins and Gold. Key to its outstanding performance is Minelab’s proprietary VFLEX technology, which utilizes digital signal processing with highly calibrated analog circuits, creating a new class of single frequency detectors. This approach yields superior sensitivity, stability and improved immunity to electromagnetic interference. For the X-Terra 70 user, this means you’ll have the best machine available for your target choices, taking your passion for discovery to the next level.

“I have used this detector in many enviroments and it has worked well in every area. Its nice and light so I can swing it all day! Its very powerful and Im finding fairly deep coins on the beach from 5″ to 12″ depending on what setting and coil you are using, this detector will go deep. The prospecting mode is nice and sensitive and it picks up my 0.4 gram test nugget loud and clear. The power consumption is outstanding and the 4AA batteries will keep the detector huming for a very long time. There isnt anything I dislike about this detector, I think its a very good all round detector and would suit all kinds of detectorists be they novices or experts.
Depending on what country you live in and what you might hunt on a regular basis do your research and Im sure you wont look past an X-terra 70. If you do manage to get one under the regular price your getting a bloody bargain. The stock 7.5khz is a good coil but look into a DD coil for sure. The 9.5″ eliptical coil is very light and easy to move around difficult objects. Its my favourite coil by far. All in all there will always be someone who isnt happy with something but I know how good this machine really is and want to share my thoughts with anyone who is interested in a new detector. I think you will be very happy with your purchase. My main piece of advice is LEARN your detector well.”

“I purchased my XTERRA 70 in december of 2008. I’ve played with metaldetectors before but really knew very little about them and took the advice of the salemsan at my local sporting goods store. I am so glad I took his advice! I wanted an all around metal detector that I could coin shoot, relic hunt and nugget shoot with. I bought the detector and spent about 8 hours testing with it. I then took it to the park near my home. The first day, I found a beautiful gold and diamond mens ring (which actually fit me) a gold cross and chain, and numerous coins! I then took up nugget shooting as I live in Nevada and have numerous places to go. I went out 3 times and found 11 nuggets in all, all relativly small but together they totaled 3/4 of an ounce. Finally, I went to Arizona with my brother to a known placer field, and hit paydirt! I found a 12.7 ounce nugget, a 3.2 ounce nugget, and a 3.5 ounce gold nugget! All in an area no bigger than my home! I have sent pictures to Minelab with a big thanks and hopefully they will post them soon. This detector is relativly easy to learn if you read the book and watch the video and take the time to test with it. Then all you need is some luck and you cant lose…
My only complaint is the earphone jack is located on the side and is a bit of a pain sometimes because your earphone cable can snag when you set the detector on the ground to dig targets, but I can live with that. This machine is very capable, and really shines in high trash areas. It has built in modes to choose from when you first start but you can edit and save settings when you become more experienced. I bought the eliptical DD coil for gold hunting and it is VERY sensitive! I would definetly buy this again in retrospect. In fact, it does so well with the gold I dont have any plans to upgrade”

Minelab Musketeer

Ideally suited for the coin and relic hunter who needs simple solid performance. The dedicated power of this detector will amaze even the most seasoned detectorist.
On/Off; Sensitivity 1 turn control.
Ground Adjust 1 turn control & switch.
Discriminate Level Adjust 1 turn control & switch.
All Metals/Discriminate 2 pos. switch.
Mode Switch 3 pos. switch (pin-point, reset & ground enable).

“I have a Musky with the standard 8″ and the 12,5″ detech coil. The 8 is quite good, not a deep monster, but very fast on the target and quite sensitive on small targets at good depths. The 12,5 detech is very very deep, 3 feet on a WW1 German helmet, while still discriminating medium sized iron (granade’s splinters). I give it 5 stars, it can fight against every detector on the market.”

“I have been detecting for over 33 years. Throughout this time, I have owned many different metal detecters brands and models. The 5kHz Musketeer series has always been one of my favorites. I have owned the Tribune, Sterling, MuskyXS and now the Advantage. It is, without a doubt, the deepest seeking detector available in this price range. It has outstanding depth of detection, excellent separation of targets, superior sensitivity to small objects and easy on the pocketbook.
To the credit of Minelab, they built the Advantage on the design of the Sovereign Elite. Same rod, same housing mounts and same weight and balance. And, as with the Sovereign Elite, you can change the Advantage to a hipmount detector by simply placing the housing in the hipmount bag. Personally, I prefer to mount mine under the armrest, just like the Elite. I find that this makes the Advantage almost perfectly balanced and a pleasure to use. The mounting bracket to accomplish this is readily available from your Minelab dealer.

The Advantage is a silent search, motion detector, with adjustable ground balance, variable discrimination mode, all-metal mode, adjustable sensitivity and a pinpoint mode. As with most sophisticated electronics, those who don’t take the time to adjust theirs for the particular site they are hunting may find the Advantage to be noisy or acting erratically. They believe that turning the controls to maximum capacity will increase their finds. That is not the case. You must not over-drive the sensitivity setting and properly adjust the ground balance if you want to maximize your finds.
Once set up properly, the Advantage runs as quiet as a church mouse, and even running high levels of discrimination, it will hunt deeper than most other detectors on the market. With the wide variety of OEM and aftermarket coils available, you can use your Advantage for the beach, relic sites or coin hunting in parks and yards. For all around hunting, you won’t find a better “bang for the buck” than the Minelab Advantage. No frills. Just a serious metal detector for the serious coin or relic hunter.”

Minelab Metal Detector Sovereign GT

Packed with features including 17 frequencies, automatic Ground Tracking, Iron Mask (on/off), manual & automatic sensitivity, 2-band Noise Cancel and much more. The on-board computer chip handles all the work so you can concentrate on what you want – more good targets.
The Tornado Coil system is lightweight, ultra tough, waterproof and non-buoyant. It is ideal for anywhere you want to use it. The Tornado coil has its own on-board circuitry adding power and depth to this outstanding detector. Whatever you’re looking for, Minelab’s Sovereign GT has the penetrating power and versatility you need. Discrimination circuitry lets you eliminate signals from unwanted trash, while the Iron Mask enables you to detect valuable targets lying close to ferrous junk.
The Sovereign GT discriminates between good targets and unwanted trash with astonishing depth and can be use from the park or building site to the sandy beach or the gold fields.
Minelab’s BBS Technology automatically transmits 17 separate frequencies over a range from 1.5khz to 25khz. This means you have more depth, greater sensitivity and more accurate discrimination.
All-terrain ready with NEW “ACCU-TRAK” Digital Ground Balance featuring selectable Fixed and Automatic Tracking options.
Incredible Depth on targets that old fashioned VLF detectors just don’t see.
Find the good targets next to trash with the NEW IRON MASK mode.
You pick the mode that best suits you with the NEW Silent Search/Threshold switch.
Hunt in the clearest channel available with the 2-Band Noise Cancel switch.
Advanced Discrimination and Notch Filtering for the elimination of trash targets.
Hunt LONGER and with more comfort with the GT’s NEW balanced deluxe shaft.

“Owned my GT now for 10 months. I find it unbeatable on ploughed field & pasture. Used it on the beach with no problems. It was a bit confusing at first wondering what all the buttons actually did but once understood I think it will be hard to beat. I have used Tesoro Tejon, X terra 70, Matrix m6, Explorer XS, when out with the club up against the big guns – se – exp 11 – none of these are as productive.
Play with the sensitivity it will find anything. Just purchased a sef coil & it is the best coil out there. Going over ring pulls & cans etc the machine gives an elastic feel to the tone. I will not part with this now. The nulling can be a bit annoying as can the threshold hum. Turn it to silent search turn up the sens, turn up the thresh, so you can barely hear it seems to give it a quicker recovery speed. Best value for money out there.”

“If the Excalibur is the big sword then the Sovereign GT is the rapier, mine paid for itself within 3 weeks in gold finds on S Florida beaches, its sensative to small gold and has good depth, I use an Excalibur for water hunting but always the GT for wet sanding, in the wet sand its a gold magnet. No big learning curve with this machine, listen to what the machine is telling you by the tones of the different metal targets and 9 times out of 10 you know what the target is before you dig it up. If you want to find the fine gold chains & rings the other machines are leaving behind, walk slowly, sweep slowly and the SovGT will pick them out for you, it also works great in trashy areas.”

Minelab Detectors The Beach Excalibur

The unique design of the Multiple frequency Excalibur allows you to use it as effectively in or out of the water. Whether working the beach, wading at any depth or diving a wreck at 200 feet, the Excalibur will perform every time. The Excalibur is THE ONLY choice by professional divers around the world. Powered by Broad Band Spectrum (BBS) Technology, the amazing depth and accuracy of the Excalibur continues to amaze long time divers and everyday beachcombers.
The Excalibur 800 has an 8 inch search coil, differentiating it from the Excalibur 1000.

“I’ve had my EXC 800 for about 2 weeks now and I love it. I have owned several other brands. I’ve had the Surfmaster PI which worked very well but has no discrimination. You will dig a lot of small DEEP iron targets. I also have a CZ-70 which I love as well. But it won’t go diving.

Something most folks appear to be overlooking in writing reviews is that the Excalibur is designed as an underwater unit. I get the feeling you bought it as a beach unit. Yes, it’s heavy. Try using a waterproof unit underwater and you will complain about it. Why? because it will float. The Surfmaster floated and was a pain to use underwater. The Minelab doesn’t float. That’s the way it should be. Yes, there is a problem with the wiring when you hipmount. However, I’ve seen the Fisher CZ-5 wiring break several times on the same unit after hipmounting. This problem isn’t isolated to Minelab. The discrimination works very well. You don’t need the pinpoint function. It pinpoints just fine in discriminate mode. I guess if you are digging ferrous material maybe the pinpoint mode would be helpful. The depth is fine by me. I’ve dug targets 12-14 inches deep. Battery life is good. I thinks folks are being critical here. I haven’t run the batteries dead yet. Here’s why. I charge it up each time I’m finished with it. Average time is around 10-15 hours. Come on folks, I doubt that there are many of you are out there swinging a detector for 10 to 15 hours non-stop. Price?? A little high but what isn’t besides a Bounty hunter. You get what you pay for.
I would rate this Excalibur as a top of the line unit. That’s just my opinion.”

“I have used the Minelab excalibur for 10 years and have found coins from 1675 to 1800′s. This machine is simply the best for finding coroded or salt disguised treasures. This machine does not waste your digging time which is crucial to a long day on the beach. Reliability 100% perfect with no failures. Try to find a used one for sale and see how well they hold there value !! Only serious detectorist need to buy this machine”

Whites dfx Metal Detector

The DFX comes in two versions, the DFX and the DFX-300. The difference is the DFX-300 has a 12 inch Spider search coil for even deeper search capacity, as opposed to the DFX’s 9.5 inch standard search coil. Both are unsurpassed in their ability to find the deeper targets or good targets scattered in trashy areas. With the exception of the search coils, both are identical in other respects.
Multiple Frequency Operation. Use 3 kHz or 15 kHz, or use both frequencies simultaneously.
Best Data displays the most reliable target info, or use Correlate to reject iron and other questionable targets.
The DFX comes with 9 factory loaded, pro-designed turn on & go programs that you can use right out of the box or customize to your own personal settings. Listen to the sounds that indicate a good target, then pull the trigger to find out the target’s depth! There are 10 basic adjustments available & 34 pro options as well including Tone I.D., Sweep Speed, Silent Search, Fade Rate, Recovery Speed, Block Edit, Auto Trac Speed.
High-definition back-lit display.
Ground filtering from 2 filters to 6. Use 2 for quick response and up to 6 for superior depth in mineralized grounds.
Sweep Speed Adjust allows you to compensate for moving quicker or slower over the ground.
Rejection feature. A complete range from total acceptance to total rejection.
Big, bold VDI numbers read out alongside target icons, to see how deep to dig.

“I’ve had the DFX for a bit over a year now and would like to add my opinion. I have been metal detecting for 30 years and have used a fair share of metal detecters. For those who say the DFX is complicated I’m guessing they have problems using the television remote. The DFX is as much a turn-on-and-hunt detector as any I’ve seen. I used the factory coin/jewelry program for the first 3 months and found coins easily at 8″ missed by other top of the line detectors.
To this day I am still pulling old coins from our city park where other detectors have quit producing. Some are not that deep but the other detectors failed to respond. I know this because on our club hunts we have each member check each signal before we dig, and most of the other detectors fail to detect them at all.
The DFX is susceptible to EMI(electromagnetic interference) so leave your cell phone at home. I found 75% of my interference was from my own cell phone.
In it’s factory programs the depth of the DFX isn’t all that impressive, although I got 8-9″ consistently, but the dual frequency does a great job of pulling keepers out of “worked out” areas. Once you get comfortable with the DFX’s characteristics just a few simple adjustment turns it into a deep seeking monster.
The DFX is as simple or complicated as you want to make it. For those who are afraid they can not run the DFX, you really need to get your hands on one to try and you’ll see it couldn’t be simpler unless it had 1 knob”

“Hello, first off I would like too thank the whites electronics people for everything and anything I have ever needed help with, they are what makes whites what it is today. OK now I have been a metaldetectorist for a lot of years and have used a few different brands of detectors and have too say the whites dfx is simply unsurpassed in its ability to find smaller and better finds, I always come out on top no matter what other brand of detector is being used at the same detecting site! And yes I mean top of the line brands.
I am vary happy with the fact of being able to set the controls the way I like them. I have found nails over 12 inches and yes I could tell they were nails and musket balls at 10 inches load and clear with the stock 950 coil and we have soil that has lots of minerals etc., so I don’t understand it when people say that the dfx doesn’t rank high in the depth department because from my experience in the field it sure is a deep seeker. I also would like too say it is not that heavy compared too other top end brands and it is well balanced and it is so amazing on the salt water beaches. Theres some of what I think the dfx is and I really don’t have anything bad too say about it. So get out there and try one for your self you wont be let down and as always read-read-read all the info you can on the dfx and get out there and use it in the real world because it is a todays real world detector. Thank you.”

“I just received my MXT 300 to replace my Whites Prizm II. The Prizm is a coin magnet and an excellent choice for the price, but it was time to expand my horizons. I’ve swept several of the local schools with the Prizm since last summer. I felt confident there was little left to find. That seemed like a perfect test for the MXT in coin and jewelry mode. As far as setup goes, I followed the Whites instructions and will fine tune settings as I get more familiar with the machine.
As expected, the swept areas had few shallow coins, but the MXT was picking up solid reads up to a foot down. I was out of probe and coin popper range, but the MXT pinpointed coins perfectly. I was able to keep the digging damage to a minimum and still pull up some nice finds. To me, leaving a field intact is really important. In a week, I’ve only found one wheatie, but lots of deep clad. The machine has the depth and targeting I was looking for. Finding the good stuff is only a matter of time.
Using the 12’ coil in an area with moderate trash requires some pinpointing patience, but it is successful. I will purchase a smaller DD coil, but there’s no rush. I read that the MXT is a noisy machine as well. It does talk when it finds a target, but I’ve already come to trust what the tones are saying about what’s in the ground below. It’s not noisy to me, just communicating.
I’ve tried the relic mode out of curiosity, but that’s part of the continuing learning curve. There are a few sites to try this on as time allows. I expect good things in this mode as well.
In summary, the Whites MXT 300 is money well spent and detecting well enjoyed. Highly recommended.”

“I’ve been metal detecting for 28 yrs. and have owned a variety of metaldetectors. I was shopping around for the most sensitive machine available. I have owned 3 different Garrett detectors and was leaning towards whatever Garretts had to offer in the $1000.00 range. After a long conversation with a local dealer who dealt with Whites also he was ready to sell me a Garrett but kept insisting that the MXT was a superior machine. I relented as I would also be saving myself $200.00 and purchased the MXT. I’ll say that I’m very happy that I went with the MXT as it is the best detector I’ve ever purchased. For superior depth and sensitivity to coins, relics and jewelry you can’t beat it provided you learn how to use it. I don’t care about all the other reviews that it’s a noisy machine. Learn to adjust it. If your going to find deep and small objects you need a sensitive machine such as the MXT. Remember practice makes perfect. That’s what it takes to realize the superiority of this machine. A good set of headphones will enhance it’s performance. Where there’s a lot of trash there’s treasure. I do fine with the standard 9.5 coil but I’ve had a lot of experience. This machine easily seperates targets. I love it.”

“I purchased a Whites Prizm 4 on Ebay used. I have had it about 3 weeks now. I have searched in my back yard, a little bit at the local park and at the beach. Sense I have never detected before I can not compare it to others but I can say this works great. I find everything. Once I learn to tell the different tones and get the pinpoint down so I dig less I will be deadly with this. I have found about two dozen coins and a gold wedding band already at the beach. This detector finds coins in the sand and dirt 8 plus inches deep. I say it?s better than some of the other brands because there are others that search the same beach I am and I am finding coins over places I am sure they have covered. Two nights ago I found a nickel buried 9 inches deep in the sand and clay. I do find a lot of soda can pull tabs but once I figure the toning out hopefully I will be able to skip them. It even hit on a copper line In my back yard I did not know was there that was buried a foot deep.”

“The first metal detector I bought was a Prizm IV. I purchased it with the supplied 8 inch coil and I purchased the 950 coil as well. The Prizm is very accurate on target ID, pinpointing, and depth. If it tells you that a quarter is 5 inches underground, and you then use the pinpointing option you will find the quarter 5 inches under the ground in the center of the coil. I also love the three tone target ID option, I always use it. The smart notch funtion is ok, but I never use it. I have some other detectors that seem to be more sensitive to small metal objects at greater depths than the Prizm IV, but they are not always accurate. I have had good depth results with the Prizm IV, I found a button at nine inches. I have had some “ghost signals” and that is bothersome. By that I mean you get a good target signal and you start to dig. You cut your plug start to look for the item; you can’t find the item, and you run the detector over the area again and it reads nothing. It runs very silent and sometimes you may want to check to make sure it is still on. It is very light and you can detect all day. The LCD screen is very easy to see in the bright sunlight and with sunglasses on! There is a lack of accesories for the detector though. IT would be nice to have a smaller coil for the trashy areas rather than a 950 or eight inch coil. Earlier I said that if it says a coin it is, for you new people to metal detecting don’t let that fool you. It is accurate 95% of the time, but what it is doing is reading metal composition. I have had toy cars read in as a nickel. I would not hesitate to recommend this detector to anyone new. It does not have a big learing curve, and I found coins out my first time not knowing anything about detecting other than watching the video and reading the manual.”

Whites xlt

5 pre installed ready to use programs with 10 Basic Adjustments, and 29 Pro Options. Adjust virtually every hunting aspect of your metal detector includeing Tone I.D., Sweep Speed, Silent Search, Fade Rate, Recovery Speed, etc.
High definition adjustable luminescent display back lit display for low light.
Automatic Ground Balance with AutoTrac.
White’s exclusive SignaGraph. What’s in the ground is on the screen.
Sweep and watch the display read out bold VDI numbers alongside target icons.

“After a day in the field with this machine, I’m impressed. Used XLTs are the 1 bargain, and better than machines twice the price. The SignaGraph target analysis is superb at identifying iron and trash but telling you when to dig. Sweeping the coil several times over a target builds up columns on the display, and you soon see if it’s worth digging if there are only one or two adjacent tall columns or part columns. It works almost perfectly.
VCO pinpointing is excellent, although depth indication is not always too accurate (but I didn’t expect it to be with the variety of target size I’m looking for). Not a problem at all. The bottom line is target analysis, and the XLT scores heavily in that area.
Well made 8AA battery compartment, and a well-balanced machine – I carry mine on my shoulder on the stem S-curve, and it stays there without me hardly touching it.
Very sensitive to extremely small targets – I was amazed. This is critically important in the UK where our ancient coins are tiny.
Lots of settings to play with, so lots of reading is required. Look at everyone’s programs and comments on the web, and find out what works for you. The XLT is a powerful user-friendly machine. With a little experience you’ll discover how to unleash its power and intelligence. Not really a beach machine.
I’ve used a number of different detectors in my time, but this is honestly the best metal detector. I’ll be looking to buy a second one in case they get scarce in the future. For the experienced user, the XLT is a must-have.”

“I spent 2 years with a fisher 1266x-a powerful, non computerised detector. After several months with the XLT, these are my impressions:
1)The four pre-set programs are good, if a little lacking in depth. It’s possible to increase sensitivity & pre-amp gain to get a bit deeper. The coin program still will only get you about 6-7 inches on a dime/sixpence. This is your limit for a trashy park.
2) very sensitive on hammered & small items-very useful for the ancient & medeival sites we have in the uk.
3) The use of mixed mode with a enhanced relic mode really shows the XLT to be a depth monster!
Silver threepence at 7 inches gives a huge signal!
This program not possible on aluminium infested parks, only quieter fields. Also the mixed mode operates like a goldmaxx, not nulling out a coin next to a nail.
In short a great detector. It will take a while to be at full speed with it, though it will be worth it.”

Whites Metal Detector Surfmaster PI

The Surfmaster PI detects with unbelievable depth and sensitivity on the hardest-to-hunt black sand beaches, and in wet salt.

Enhanced sensitivity to gold – The most sought after beach targets (gold jewelry) respond at maximum depths. Pulse delay control selects the level of rejection on nonferrous trash. Quick target recovery so you hear good targets even mixed in with the junk.
Automatic ground rejection.
Completely waterproof to 100 feet.
Variable sweep speed-slow to very fast…no loss of depth.
Quick target to trash recovery picks out treasure mixed in with junk.
Tuner control for threshold tone and battery strength.
8 “AA” penlight batteries.

“After reading every review I could find, I decided I wanted to find my treasures in the ocean and chose the PI Pro. This detector finds it big or small. I do believe I have dug up every bottle cap and can tab made. This machine has a solid tone when it finds metal and I mean all metals. I do not say this in a bad way knowing what I purchased the PI Pro for, doing exactly that. When you hear that solid tone, dig it all. I have had great beginers luck, rings, coins, chains etc., right in the shore line in 1 to 3 feet of water. This is a metal finding machine. Have fun.”

“The Whites Surf-Master PI Pro almost thinks it is a VLF detector. Swing it fast or slow, it will nail targets and deep! It is well made, quite sensitive to gold and pinpointing is right on, 100%! Mine will air-test a wedding band at 13″+! There is no doubt that it is more sensitive to gold than silver or iron.
While the Pro is still new for me, it will out-detect my other 3 top-of-the-line water detectors… with ease and speed! (Beach Hunter ID, Excalibur, Infinium). It is so quick to respond to targets too. I believe after time one will learn good targets sounds. I am amazed at how much metal there is in the ground, when using the Pro. The Pro ferretts targets out like nothing I’ve seen. The Pro is for treasure hunters who are willing to dig more but find the gold.
There is no doubt that when the chips are down, reach for a PI Pro! It is almost like a magnet.”

“The F5 has good depth in my area. I’ve used a lot of metaldetectors over the years and this one will hang with the best of them. I’d say the same depth as the Garrett 1500 and 2500 in disc mode and every bit as deep as the Whites XLT and DFX in preset programs for that fact better then the DFX in it’s preset programs. I don’t think someone new to detecting will pick this detector up for awhile so take your time a learn your detector.
There is a learning curve! All the info you will need is right in front of you. In fact this detector gives you more real time info then any detector I’ve used and I’ve been at it since 1993. Depth wise I hit a quater at 8 inches and it rang out loud and clear I think it could take one at 10 inches no problem.”

“I read Jerry in Oklahoma’s review and I felt compelled to share my opinion of this detector.

Jerry said he can only get accurate target ID down to 4″ on a penny. If that’s the case, it’s one of three things:
1. User Error
2. Really bad (highly mineralized) ground
3. A defective machine

My experience has been that the target ID is accurate on smaller coins to 6″. I’ve found two silver dimes at 6″ and both hit solidly in the coin range. My deepest finds so far have been a 8″ Mercury Dime and a 8″ 1942 (non-silver) nickel. The Mercury was an iffy signal and I thought it was probably junk before I dug it, with ID numbers all over the map from 30′s on up.

This is very good depth for a midprice detector. And that’s honest depth, not “my Explorer found a half dime at 12 inches” b.s. If that extra inch or so of depth you can get with a high end detector is important to you, you might want to go with the F5′s higher priced brothers the F70 or F75 which are considered by many to be as deep as any machines out there.

In my area the Fe3O4 meter almost always reads two bars when I’m over clean ground so my soil is lightly moderate. Except in the trashiest areas I’m able to run the detector hot – a setting I often use is threshold at 0 and gain at 90.

An interesting thing about this detector, and something that takes getting used to, is when I run the detector hot and hold it still it will chatter and the ID numbers will jump all over the place. But when I swing the detector the chattering and jumping display numbers go away. The detector is stabilized by the movement. I’ve gotten used it, but in the beginning it was very annoying when I put the detector down to retrieve targets and it kept chattering unless the controls were turned down or headphones removed.

More important than the stellar depth, the recovery speed and target separation are phenomenal. And the interface is functionally superb with the stubby knobs and a lot of information right in front of you.

Yes, I really like this detector a lot. But here’s what I don’t like:
1. Fisher markets this as a simple to use detector, no doubt to appeal to the Cabelas shopping newbies. But the F5 has a lot of horsepower so to speak, and a lot going on under and above the hood. I don’t think this is the best choice for a first detector. There is a definite learning curve made even longer by…
2. An absolutely terrible instruction manual loaded with mistakes. To get the manual corrections go the Findmall Fisher forum and search for Mike Hillis’ manual corrections post. Mike is an F5 guru and you can learn a lot by reading his archived posts. Hopefully Fisher has come out with a corrected manual by now.
3. The build quality is solid enough but the ID display covering is a very flimsy plastic. After about 10 hours of use I was getting enough scratches on it to realize that if I didn’t do something I’d be lucky to be able to read the display at 100 hours. So I got a sheet of thin clear plastic, cut it to size and attached it on the sides with gaffers tape. That’s worked well to protect the display.
4. No extra coils yet. The stock 5X10 is an excellent all-purpose coil, but it would be nice to have some extra coils available. Fisher says they’re coming soon, we’ll see.

The more I use this detector, the more I like it”

“I have been detecting since 1971. Owned a lot of different detectors. Never owned any easier to use. One knob does it all. I bought it because I didn’t want to drag the more expensive detector through the bushes, mud and rocks. Several thousand coins later, including Indians, seated and silver I cant find much to complain about. Other detectors may go deeper or discriminate better but I dont think you can find a better basic detector.”

“I bought this one off ebay for my oldest boy. He wanted to get into this hobby bad. It is perfect! It is light, works great and does not eat 9 volts! It is simple on knob. It detects anything and will go pretty deep! I paid $79 and I think it was money well spent. It works on wet grass just as well as dry grass. It finds brass, copper, gold, silver, tin, bronze etc……The discrimination knob works well. It fits me at 6’2″ and my 9 year old which is about 5′ tall.”

“I was very happy to see that Fisher upped the performance ante of the ID Edge over the Excel. While a very good detector, I felt the Excel lacked a little in depth compared to other detectors in its price range. While not quite in the same league with top of the line units, the ID Edge has more than sufficient depth in most ground conditions to handle 90% of my hunting needs.
Considerable use at old and new sites proved it sufficiently deadly at picking up those iffy signals in trash/iron to put it in the upper echelon of coin detectors. While hot on coins, I was also pleased to see that Fishers engineers were able to tune it for above average sensitivity to small low conductive targets. This kind of sensitivity to small low conductors is seldom seen with lower frequency “coin” detectors. When compared against another new ID detector to come out recently, in ground useage showed the Edge to read the small bits solidly in the low numbers range without the bouncing readings from iron to foil that the other detector displayed despite its slightly higher operating frequency.
My hunting is split between land sites in spring/fall and shallow fresh water wading during the summer months so it was nice to see that Fisher made the Edge chest mountable, an ability the Excel lacked and was sorely missed by me.
Fresh water wading requires a detector that is able to handle a wide variety of conditions. Whether hunting on deep sand lake bottoms, mixed sand and gravel bottoms or sand/clay the Edge handled it with no apparent problems. On occasion I did find it necessary to reduce the sensitivity to 6 to enable the detector to ground balance in the water. However, after the auto ground balance procedure I was always able to increase the sensitivity to near maximum with the detector operating totally stable.
Fresh water wading requires a detector that is able to handle a tremendous amount of iron. This is an area where I found that the ID Edges big brother the Coins$trike faltered. Iron responses are amplified greatly in the water and the C$ circuits are unable to handle this increased signal strength. The Edge on the other hand handles the same conditions with seeming ease.
Others have pointed out some problems with the ID Edges control interface. The pushbuttons are a little odd in their tactile response I admit. That aside, IMO Fisher engineers did an excellent job where it counts. On land or shallow wading the ID Edge shows it has “the right stuff”

Fisher Metal Detector CZ

Go anywhere, do anything, with the all-weather target ID machine that’s leak proof to 250 feet deep, the Fisher CZ-21 Quicksilver metal detector. Its patented electronics make it deep-seeking while it ignores the destabilizing effects of salt water, plus, it offers three tones to identify varying types of metal with faint-target audio boost.
POWER ON/OFF VOLUME: Dual Function potentiometer switch. Volume settings above “5” amplifyfaint, deep target sounds and limit loud target responses.

“I’ve been using the CZ5 now for about a year. It is the best coin machine bar none. It consistantly out performs the Coinstrike & CZ70pro. Its truely a nickel magnet. Its ashame that they replaced this unit with the CZ3d after all these years. I think it was a big mistake, but mistakes are made all the time with the intent to improve something that doesn’t need improving.”

“I think the cz5 is one of the best detecters out there. I have bought and tried so many new models that come out and always end up selling them and going back to my good old cz5. I put mine on a strap and put it over my shoulder, I don’t think it is heavy at all that way, and I have a bad back. I see someone up above said it was heavy, I never heard that before from anyone. If a guy don’t hip or chest or shoulder mount it might be a little heavy, for use older guys anyway.
All around it is a great detecter, the only complaint I would have is it does like nails, until a guy gets good and used to it, that might be the main thing to grip about. But it depends where you hunt and also like I said, after you get used to it a guy can pretty much tell if it is a nail or not.
It is a real good Nickel finder, maybe the best I have ever used. All and all I would say the meter is about 90% correct, which is pretty good considering all the hundreds if not thousands of different items out there we pick up on the ground. This is just my own opinion of this detector after using it and always goning back to it.”

Fisher Gold Bug

Like the original Fisher Gold Bug metal detector, the Fisher Gold Bug-2 is designed mainly as a gold metal detector. It offers extraordinary sensitivity, ultra-high frequency (the highest operating frequency on the market), iron-discrimination, dust and moisture resistance, audio-boost and the ability to operate in extremely mineralized soil with a 3-position mineralization switch. Backed by Fisher’s 5 Year Warranty.

Powerful 71kHz Operation for extreme
sensitivity to small gold nuggets
“IRON DISC” mode rejects iron (trash)
targets and hot rocks.
Resistant to dust and moisture.
Boosts audio signal of small and deep targets
Convertible to hipmount or chest mount
Weighs only 2.9 lbs.
Quartz-crystal locked electronics.
Takes only two, drop-in, 9-V batteries
Dual-knob ground control for coarse and
fine adjustment.

“This is an excellent VHF detector. It is very sensitive to small gold. I have dug “nuggets” that weighed in at 1/10th of a grain. It is easy to use and easy to ground balance. It has not meter so you must learn what the sounds the detector makes are telling you. It has an Iron discriminate switch that I have found to be very accurate. I had a Whites XLT and loved it thus
I purchased a Whites GoldMaster 4B and I hated it because the coil was very eratic and gave many false readings. The Gold Bug 2 has been great and has produced many nuggets – from the very small to the fairly good sized. Overall in my opinion — it is a great gold detector that is simple, light and easy to use.”

“Although iI would not recamend this detector for a first detect unless knowing the general concepts of metal detectors and the way they respond under certain conditions,it is a very good detector for finding gold so small that its almost not worth picking up and can be used for treasure hunting.
If your looking for a very sensitive machine that is very light and fairly easy to use once you get over the basics than I think its one of the best metal detector products out there.”

Use the menu on the right to select a brand and read reviews and specifications also videos are available for some models. Two popular makes are the Tesoro Metal Detectors and Whites Metal Detectors so ensure that you look over their products.
“I have had an Ace 250 for just over a year now. It is the 3rd detector I have owned. For the money it is packed with features and reliability. Sure if you spend $1000 you will have a better detector, but for $200 it matches most machines in the $500-$800 range. Like all detectors it has a few quirks that must be figured out.
It doesn’t like wet sand, and gives many false signals and has a hard time pinpointing them in wet sand, just turn the sensitivity down and move slowly. In playgrounds, soccer fields, and ghost towns it is a champ. Showing great depth and accuracy. It is light and can be swung all day long with only a little fatigue to the users arm. It does well in low mineralized areas at finding gold nuggets. But, think about getting a proper prospecting machine if that is your sole purpose.
In all this is the best all purpose machine for under $500. Garrett support is excellent, and so if you feel your machine is not working give them a call, they will help out. But you should use it for several hundred hours before you say it is broken r does not work. Many times it is user error, Detecting is a hobby that requires learning and so if you are unwilling to learn don’t buy any detector, cause you will not have fun.”

“I sold electronics (including metal detectors) for years, and most problems people had with their purchases were caused by them NEVER even bothering to look at the instructions! Trust me, you are not so smart that you don’t need to read the instructions!
I have an ACE 250, and being an experienced detectorist, I have had virtually none of the problems supposedly experienced by the purveyors of the bad reviews. If you go on the Garrett website, there is a very good computer-animated demo of how to pinpoint. If You just SLOW DOWN and realize that the dig point is in the MIDDLE of the sound band, and scan two ways as instructed, it is dead-on. I’ve never had a problem.
I think what many people want is a machine that will locate valuables, dig it up for them, and place it in their hand. Take the time to get to know your machine, what it is trying to tell you, and that it is a man-made contraption, and therefore not perfect!
The ACE 250 is a great little machine, is extremely fun to use, and first-time buyers or even experienced hunters wanting a great turn-on-and-go machine can’t go wrong. Just don’t worry about all the belly-aching from people who can’t be bothered with actually learning to use their machine. If the $200 price range is what you are limited to, then you can’t do better that the ACE 250. It’s a real GEM”

“The 1250 was given to me as a gift 3 years ago. It was my first machine. I have become addicted to this hobby and give all the credit to the 1250′s simplicity and production. There are very few adjustments to be made before your up and hunting. And it is deep. I have found coins up to 13″. It’s pinpointing is very accurate. I can’t see how you can beat this machine for the price”

“It was an ok unit that found a lot of shallow coins, but to compare it to an Explorer and claim it’s the same, is stretching the truth a bit.”

“Hi, I had my garret 2500 three months now and I was a little upset with it at first, But after fully understanding the machine (With takes some time) It’s the best, I know exactly what I’m digging.
Depth: This machine will go down to about 8 inches with Smaller than coin size, 16 Inches Coin size and 20 inches Plus for Large Metal objects. I dont like digging bigger holes than that as it takes all morning. (I did dig once down to 24 inches to find a Large aluminium bolt) I gave this hobby up as best finds are 2 – 10 Inches.
Imaging: The imaging is superb, But this takes some time to master, Basically upto 8 Inches spot on Deeper not so good, Will fluctuate when object not in centre of coil but once you have pinpointed the object it gives you a proper reading, Always a good idea to scan objects at 90 degress after found as can tell you wether its round or oblong like nails ect..
Coils: Superb range of coils, choosing the correct coil for the job is vital to what you want to find, Example Use Larger Imaging coil for deeper larger finds and smaller coils for shallower smaller finds, Use DD coils for Wet sand on beach and mineralised grounds, Use with the salt cancelation setting.
Discrimination: I always use all metal mode which is extremly sensitive when adjusted correctly in conjuction with Threshold, When target is found the discrimination indicators at the top of display will tell you the conductivity of the object also is more presice with coil centred on object, I also flick between custom discrimination and weed out unwanted objects on site.
Pinpointing: Excellent, but you need to start this slightly away from the object as will cancel signal if right above to start with.
Surface cancellation: Works great on trashy areas, Also advise smaller coils in these areas as multiple targets can make the display iratic.”

“I purchased my machine in May of 2005. I have found over 2000 coins, several rings, toys, keys etc. It takes time to learn the machine because of all the options. Pin pointing is great. I like the ability to switch modes with just touch of a couple of buttons while scanning. I switch back and forth between zero and coin modes constantly which helps in verifying trash. I have found that you should also dig A size targets because many coins are on end. My oldest finds are a few civil war bullets, and my best find to date is an 1880 five dollar gold coin. I have learned to trust what the machine is telling me. I am still learning it’s capabilities.”

Garrett Detector GTP

The Garrett GTP 1350 comes standard with Garrett’s new RHINO TOUGH 7×10″ PROformance Elliptical search coil. This means you will search more deeply and cover more ground per sweep than with traditional coils. The Garrett GTP 1350 is the highest performing, deepest seeking and most advanced metal detector of its kind. If you’re serious about treasure hunting, you will appreciate the GTP 1350 metaldetectors.

“I have had a Garrett GTP 1350 for two years. I have found the pinpointing superb and the target i.d. functions are very good. It is accurate to a depth up to about 8 inches and has a very sturdy design. The tone i.d. is useful for giving you the option to reject certain signals.
I have found Roman coins and brooches which are nearly two thousand years old in a variety of soil conditions. Small English hammered silver coins are also no problem.
This is my second Garrett detector and I would definitely recommend it as the best metal detector.
The only negative thing is that the display is difficult to see in direct sunlight. But I would say that the positives definitely outway the negatives. Happy hunting.”

“I first bought the Ace 250, wich by the way is a great beginner detector, I used it for a couple months but after chasing ghost signals and false readings I decided to purchased the GTP 1350 and have been amazed at its preformance. Ive only taken it out a couple of times but within minutes Im digging coins, and very accurately. The pinpointing is great, and its easy to use. Stays silent until a target hits, none of that beeping then no target to be found anywhere. I would definately recommend his detector to any one wanting a more advanced accurate machine.”

Garrett Infinium

Infinium LS Water and Beach
Completely new kind of detector for treasure hunting in any environment, no matter how extreme, including mineralized ground.
Convergence of technologies including Garretts exclusive new Advanced Pulse Induction (API).
Waterproof design for land and sea detecting.
Reverse Discrimination capability significantly assists in identifying most iron.
Adjustable operating frequency minimizes electrical interference
Automatic Ground Track with lock, slow and fast settings to master changing soil conditions.
Audio Threshold adjustment to suit individual hunting styles and listening needs.
Rugged go-anywhere design and stable, quiet performance.
Lightweight, power-saving design uses eight AA batteries.
Choice of four different control housing configurations: hip-mount, under the cuff, above or below the stem.

“I have had my Infinium for a while now and although I said that I felt it was not as good as my Sovereign on saltwater beaches, I think I am beginning to change my mind.
What I have found though is that this machine is a brain snapper in highly iron mineralised ground, and no kidding folks, this thing can find gold nuggets inside solid iron ore; Show me a VLF that can do that!
Sure the Infinium works great at the beach but there are plenty of PI detectors that do that but only a couple that will find gold in iron mineralised ground, so if it’s gold you want and your ground is highly mineralised then give the Infinium a go because you won’t get anything better for the price.”

“I think the Infinium smokes!!! I use the machine in tough black sand on the N. East coast without any issues. Where the Infinium shines is in the surf and water! The disc and iron check do work and help to really reduce junk found. This is a pro level machine and does have a learning curve. If you read the posts online you can reduce that curve alot. I also use VLFs and think they make a great pair working together as no one machine can do it all! You will dig more trash with a pulse, but out in the water targets a fewer and the good stuff is deep. The Infinium is so stable and deep detecting when adjusted correctly, that not much could touch its performance. Another trick is you can just dig the high-low signals while using the reverse disc and Iron check to just get the gold (you can cover alot of ground quick this way)! The detector is built like a tank and just works great in the water with the 8″ mono-coil! I’ll grab it in areas that have been pounded or are sanded in, as you’ll probably walk away with something good. I have all the extra coils and plan to do some relic and nugget hunting with it too. It’s a great detector to add to any serious hunters collection of water machines!”

Garret Metal Detectors – Gold

Scorpion Gold Stinger

No other gold metal detector can match the three-mode versatility offered by the Garrett Scorpion Gold Stinger™ metal detector. Just a flip of a switch is all it takes to change from Non-Motion All-Metal operation to Motion Discriminate and search for coins. Flip the switch again for true TR discrimination in order to accurately identify conductive ore. The Stingers famous Groundhog (15kHz) circuitry is reputed for its extraordinary power to penetrate ground minerals in order to zero in on nuggets, placer, float and ore veins. The Gold Stingers maneuvers remarkably well over complex ground conditions and in narrow cracks and fissures when nugget and placer searching. Includes the standard 5 x 10” elliptical search coil.

“The key to using the Scorpion to find gold is proper ground balance. It has to be perfect. When the ground balance is adjusted correctly, it will weed out most hot rocks, etc and respond strongly to gold.
I think the detector is a little difficult to use. This is mostly due to really poor user manual instructions. I sent Garrett some emails and received brief responses that did not help much. If you purchase a stinger, do the bench testing and spend about 4 hours just learning how to use it properly before you actually go out hunting.
It is also difficult to change out the batteries, especially when you are in the field.
If you are interested in gold only, I would recommend being patient and saving your money for something in the $700-$800 range. If it is the most you can afford then go for it. The Scorpion can also be used for coin shooting and general treasure hunting which is a really nice feature. I believe it works really well when used for those purposes. I think Garrett needs to revise this detector. Remember, proper ground balance is the key.”

“I was misled while purchasing this detector .I am a begining prospector and I wanted a machine that would help me pinpoint areas to prospect.First of all the machine is by no means for a beginner, the instructions are very confusing, ground balance…hah..what a joke.I cant do it for nothing. So here I sit with a piece of equipment that does not do me any good.Is there such a machine that is sensitive enough to find gold but easy to use yet inexpensive.surely there must be.Dont make the same mistake I did.Talk to a dealer in person and get to know the product before purchasing it.I do not recommend on line purchase for a beginner.”

Tesoro Detector

Tesoro Tiger Shark

On land, the Tiger Shark can be used for coin and relic hunting and even as a gold metal detector. By using the four controls on the outside, you can fine tune your detector to handle whatever conditions you are working in.
Working in the wet salt areas is where the Tiger Shark outshines the land detectors. In land conditions, the most crucial adjustment is using the ground balance to tune out mineralization. In wet salt conditions, changes in the conductivity in the sand cause most of the problems. The Tiger Shark uses a completely different set of internal settings in the SALT Mode than in the NORM Mode. There are no special controls or techniques to remember.
The Tiger Shark continues in the tradition of other great Tesoro underwater machines by having interchangeable coils available.
Searchcoil Type Round, open center concentric
Searchcoil Size 8″ diameter
Audio Frequency Approx. 270 Hz
Audio Output Stereo Piezo Headphones
Weight (may vary slightly) Less than 4½ lbs.
Salt Mode
Silent Search Motion Discriminate
Maximum Depth Rating 200 ft

“If there is one thing wrong with the Tiger Shark is it is under priced for it’s performance. It is the only VLF that you can hange coils yourself as it has a connector. Will respond to gold chains, something other detectors find hard to do. Easy to pinpoint and deep too. Has a great Ground Balance control unlike the persets on a few other water machines. Very easy on battery usage.”

“I have been using my Tiger Shark for shallow water hunting (10′ or less) for some time now and I am really impressed. It ground balance very nicely and is very sensitive to small gold and silver targets. I have found numerous small gold and silver ear rings and also chains. However, your recovery scoop needs to have very small holes to recover these small targets. I lost quite a few before I solved this problem.
I have found gold rings deep enough that it took as many as 5 to 6 deep scoops (big 8″ Scoop) to get them in my scoop, leaving a hole in the bottom well over your ankles.
I have never had a water leakage problem and the white coil makes it easy to see in murkie waters.
As far as I am concerned, this is ONE Fine Detector for my type of underwater hunting……HH”

Tesoro Sand Shark

Sand Shark combines time-proven PI circuits with the latest digital technology creating the first microprocessor controlled PI detector for the new Millennium.
Pulse Induction (PI) detectors have always been the natural choice for working wet salt beaches. Their circuitry and single loop coils will not see changes in salt-water conductivity that drive a VLF-style detector crazy. Add Tesoro Electronics’ exclusive interchangeable Printed Spiral coils (available in four sizes) and you create a fantastic PI detector. But we didn’t stop there.
The Sand Shark has two distinct operating modes: VCO and Normal. When working in the VCO mode, as targets get closer to the coil, the threshold generates a louder, higher pitched tone great for pinpointing. The Normal mode works with a single tone and is used for beachcombing and other prolonged searches.
We’ve added a microprocessor to help you customize the detector to your specific needs. Our Pulse Width control allows you to tune your detector to the best balance of depth, sensitivity, and battery life. You can also change the Normal mode audio frequency. Simply use the “F” Adjust knob to set the tone and you’re ready to go. The Sand Shark also has a new drop-in battery compartment for quick and easy changes.
Operating Frequency 600 pps
Searchcoil Type Printer Spiral
Searchcoil Size 8″ diameter
Audio Frequency Approx. 220 – 450 Hz
Audio Output Stereo Piezo Headphones
Weight (may vary slightly) Less than 4½ lbs.
Battery Requirement Eight AA DC (alkaline)
Battery Life (at preset) 10 to 20 hours
Optimum Temp. Range 30° to 100° F
Optimum Humidity 0 to 75% R.H.
Operating Modes VCO Motion ALl Metal
Adjustable Audio Frequency All Metal
Maximum Depth Rating 200 ft

“I’ve owned a Surfmaster PI from Whites and I must say the Tesoro Sand Shark is the best metal detector yet its superior in every way.
I bought a PI detector because of the badly mineralized beaches in my neck of the woods. I tried using my buddy’s M6, which supposedly handles mineralization well, but I could not get a readable signal with it. I knew the only detector that would work would be a PI.
I bought a Surfmaster and had some success with it. I was finding coins at about the 3-4 inch range. I found one silver ring at about 5 inches once. However, I didn’t like the balance of it. I decided to try out the Sand Shark and it was the best decision I’ve made in a long time.
The Sand Shark is the first PI detector with microcircuit technology. No more “timing” the detector over the ground and missing target spots. The Sand Shark remains constant during the entire sweeping process. Best of all… it’s DEEP! I consistently find treasure at 8 inches and deeper. I found a gold ring at about 11 or 12 inches! No BS (I actually measured it.) In badly mineralized soil, this kind of depth is incredible.
The Lifetime warranty is also a BIG plus for the Sand Shark. The Surfmaster only had a 2 year warranty from Whites. Tesoro really stands by their products. I’m very happy with the Sand Shark. I couldn’t recommend it more if you are looking for a straight up beach hunter.
If you plan on doing a mix of land and beach hunting, check out the Tiger Shark. It gets good depth on the beach as well, but the Sand Shark outperforms it because it is more specialized.”

“This machine is great, it takes a little time to learn it, but is almost as deep as an excalibur. Hairpins will make a double blip sound so you dont have to worry about them. I love my sand shark, and after 2-3 months of using it I have found two 14k gold rings! Get it”

Tesoro Deleon

The Tesoro DeLeon is a Target Identification Metal Detector or T.I.D. The Tesoro DeLeon is designed as an easy to use, turn-on-and-go detector. The faceplate has only four controls: Sensitivity, Discriminate, Threshold and a Mode Switch. It uses the same circuitry as the Cortes, so you can expect the same depth and sensitivity from the DeLeon that the Cortes is well known for. The DeLeon’s display screen is one character high by eight characters wide. It is larger and easier to read than the Tesoro Cortes display but does not carry as much information. Starting from left to right on the faceplate, you will see that the DeLeon has a Coin Depth reading, a five segment bar graph and a two-digit Target ID Number. The bar graph shows several categories for ID purposes, but we recommend that it be used with the ID Number for the most accurate information.

“This has to be one of the best metaldetectors out there. I have 26 years of experience and have tried most of the top of the line machines. This is a light weight unit that will not fail you. This tesero deleon has more depth then most of the more expensive machines. Also, a great competition machine and very easy to pinpoint with. Went heads up against my friend for fun, found 20 something coins to his 2 coins. Folks, I am not brand loyal, but if a unit performs, except the facts. And this unit does, plus you cannot beat the life time warranty. Do you wont to spend 800 or 1300 or 400 on something that will perform as good or better? As for me, I like to save money.THIS IS TO ME THE BETTER DETECTOR MADE IN THIS PRICE RANGE EASY. AND IT WILL BEAT MOST OF THE HIGHER DOLLAR ONES TO.”

“I have had this unit for several years and it is my grab and go machine. It’s lightweight, balanced and no pin pointer is needed as the coin is always located in the small hole in the middle of the coil. The target ID can be useful and I attached the following as a guide after air tests: Small gold 20-30. Nickels 33-39. Ladys gold ring 35-41. Mens gold ring 41-54. lead bullet 58. Rifle brass 62-68. Zinc penny 66-78. Coins all 95. I started with a Tesoro Inca and I find that I often dig regardless of the Id when the sound is right. In parks, I often run with the discriminator level between foil and nickles. But when the tabs are real thick, I put the discriminator on zinc where unlike the clear tone of coins, tabs give a short chirp. Just Raise the coil 6-8 inches above the ground to Identify and eliminate aluminum cans that register at 95. I once found a clad quarter at 12 inches (it had oxidized the soil for a couple inches around). Only negatives: Not good at the beach and I hold the battery cover closed with a large rubber band. A great unit for the money though.”

Tesoro Cortes

Cortés
The far right hand part of the display is a battery level indicator. This gives an accurate measure of your current battery level. On the far left-hand side is the probable depth indicator. The Cortés uses the phase shift of the target to determine the probable target and then looks at the amplitude of the signal to determine the depth. For example: a nickel and a quarter are in the ground and the quarter is deeper than the nickel; if we just went off of amplitude change, the detector may read the two targets as being the same depth. However, the Cortés would show the quarter as being deeper because its phase shift response is different than that of the nickel.
In the center of the lower display is a nine segment bar graph display. The different segments represent the following possible targets: iron; foil: nickel; round tab; square tab; zinc penny; copper penny and dime; quarter; half and dollar. The graph shows what the coil saw during the entire sweep of the coil. The targets metal composition and orientation in the ground can cause “smearing” or possible indication in more than one graph segment. For example: pull tabs usually will not respond in a single segment but give signals in two or three segments. To help the detectorist decide on the target, we have also included an ID Number display next to the bar graph.
The ID Number takes the largest part of the signal and converts it to a two digit number. When Vince put together the scale for the ID Number, he decided to put the most resolution in the middle range of targets. This is the area where nickels, pull tabs and gold rings lie. We know that iron will always be on the low end of the scale and silver coins and jewelry will always be on the high end. So iron targets will always give a reading of 0 and silver will always give a reading of 95. The Cortés now gives you the ability to decide what you want to dig. One of the hardest parts of designing detectors is the fact that pull tabs can vary from place to place. But a hunter working in the same area can use the ID Number to learn the characteristics of the local pull tabs and effectively ignore them.
For those detectorists that prefer a notch filter discrimination, we have also added a simple flip switch to activate either a narrow or wide notch window. When the display is blanked, two “N”s or three “W”s will appear on the screen. The N will indicate a narrow notch window and will be in the round tab and square tab portion of the graph segments. The wide notch window will cause a W to be in the round tab, square tab and zinc penny segments. These indications are an easy way to check what part of the scale is being notched out. The notch indicators will only show when there is no target under the coil. When there is a target signal, no matter if the target has been discriminated or not, the display will show the information of the target.
The Sum mode is another feature to help identify targets. While the detector is in either the Discriminate or All Metal mode, the display shows the target information from the entire sweep of the coil. Each time the coil passes over the target the microprocessor generates a new target ID reading. While this is nice for general searching, it can be confusing while pinpointing. This is where the Sum mode becomes useful. Pushing the springloaded switch into the Sum mode causes the detector to start a multi-tone ID and averages all of the coil passes over the target. The tone ID has nine different tones and relates directly to the bar graph segments. The higher up on the graph the target is, the higher the pitch of the audio signal. Averaging the coil passes over the target gives the detectorist the ability to get rid of most of the signal noise that prevents making an accurate target identification. Here’s how it works: when the detectorist gets a target signal that he wishes to check out, he pushes and holds the Mode switch in the Sum position. Shortening his coil sweep to only a two or four inch sweep he passes the coil over the target three to seven times. The short multiple sweeps give the microprocessor the chance to sum the passes and average them. During the sweeps the audio ID will start at the lowest signal and will get progressively higher in pitch until there is no more change. When this happens the detector is giving the most accurate ID possible. Then the user can decide if he wants to dig or ignore the target.

“Love this detector it makes a great gold metal detector and easily matches the best white metal detectors that are on the market. The 10 khz is great for deep gold jewelry, artifacts, and coins. It is more sensitive to small gold jewelry than my CZ-20 beach machine. The screen ID gives me plenty of info before I dig and it ID’s in both modes, along ith giving me target depth. It is light and well balanced, can swing it all day. I sweep fast, it reacts fast and recovery is fast too. Pinpointing is exact. The visual ID is small, but not a real problem. I like the knobs, don’t like detectors that have tactile buttons and menus.”

“After using a Garrett GTI-2500 for over a year, I decided to buy a Tesoro Cortes. I bought the Cortes because I read that it was very light and went deeper than other detectors. Both are true. When I first used the Cortes, I fell in love with it and put away my Garrett.
At first, I was worried by the manual ground balancing in all-metal mode. But I found that ground balancing the Cortes is extremely easy — if you’re having trouble, then you haven’t read the instructions. It took me less than one minute to do and is much quicker to do than to explain. And it’s not even necessary if you use the discrim mode!
It detects much deeper than the Garrett — I was finding targets at over 9 inches deep (bear in mind that the Cortes will detect targets over 9 inches deep, but the Cortes’ display stops at 9 inches depth). Even in trashy areas, the target display didn’t jump around that much; I was able to identify good targets easily.
Pinpointing is also very easy; making an “X” over a target a couple times in all-metal mode almost always zeroes in on it. But what really amazed me was how well it performed under high-voltage wires. Power lines always interfere terribly with my GTI-2500, even with the sensitivity turned way down. But the Cortes was totally unaffected, even with the sensitivity maxed.
If Tesoro could make the Cortes any better, I would recommend that they put the headphone jack on the back of the battery pack (instead of the electronics housing), and make the discrim mode multi-tone (to match the 9-bar display).
Even without my suggested “improvements”, the Cortes is an excellent value and a pleasure to use. I strongly recommend it to both beginning and experienced detectorists.”

GoldenMax
Full size depth, sensitivity, Four Tone Audio ID and a user adjustable Notch Filter Discriminate all placed into the lightest detector housing on the market. At less than 2 ½ pounds, the Golden µMax lets you control what you want to find. Our adjustable notch window lets you, not the engineers, decide how to pick through the pull tabs to find the nickels and gold rings, while the ED 120 discrimination knocks out all of the nasty iron. The tone ID will also give you a great idea of what your target is. The Golden µMax will help you define your targets and make better use of your detecting time.

“I’ve owned three Goldens, and regret it each time I sell one. The bottom line with this machine is that you need to give it time. Tesoro says it has four tones, which is somewhat true… It really has many many more. It has it’s own language that you will learn over time.
Solid targets have solid tones. For example — I found that gold rings and targets similar in composition have somewhat of an ascending tone. But if it is a pulltab, it would be a descending tone on the backswing.
I’ve taken my golden on the beach alongside my buddy who had his Minelab Excalibur, and it kept right up with him. Why? Is it as deep as an excalibur? I’d say no. But, when you understand what the Golden is telling you, you’ll dig plenty.
The notch setting takes some getting used to as well, and you’ll need to practice with it for a while. With the narrow notch setting, I hunted a field that was used for rock concerts. It was littered in tabs and crushed pieces of aluminum. I dug three pulltabs that day, and lots of nickels.
Give this one some time, and you will see it’s a keeper…”

“I like the tones an option I wish they would allow you to select on the teyjon. With this tesoro I can tell you when I am going to dig a silver coin by the warm tone it gives me.
The notch is nice to use too. I take some pulltabs I found for the day and can notch them out with good results. This machine has found me the most out of many machines I have used thru the years.”

Tesoro Tejon

The Tejón’s two discriminate modes are fully user definable. The engineers at Tesoro have given the user the ability to set the machine for their hunting needs. Each discriminate mode uses ED180 circuitry. The regular discriminate also incorporates a full-time all metal setting. Want to hunt in all metal and check the targets for iron or discriminate out iron and perform a check for high value silver or gold targets? It’s no problem for the Tejón. Simply set the Discriminate and Alternate Discriminate modes for your style of hunting and swing the coil. Then use the Trigger Switch to quickly change modes to check your targets. Push the trigger forward to activate the Alternate Discriminate or pull the trigger back to pinpoint the target. The Tejón makes it fast and easy.
But the user definable features do not stop there. The Tejón has a manually adjustable ground balance that works for both the All Metal mode and both Discriminate modes. Using a three and three quarter potentiometer, the Tejón will meet and defeat all soil conditions and is suitable for any hunting style.
The Tejón also has an audio tone adjust. If you have trouble hearing certain tones or have certain tones that you are more comfortable with, the Tejón can meet you desires. Using the tone adjustment control, you can switch from a normal tone with VCO pinpoint/all metal to any one of thousands of different audio tones for the All Metal and Discriminate modes. Fine tune the tone until it is right for you and see how much easier it is to find, pinpoint and dig the targets that you are looking for.
While the Tesoro Tejón was designed mostly for coin and relic hunters, its user definable controls are simple and easy to use making it able to handle just about any type of treasure hunting that you may wish to try.

“This Tejon Rocks! I am a Relic hunter and have used Nautilus IIB’s and Minelabs for many years. When I started looking for a new detector I had a wish list. I wanted a machine that would go as deep as a Nautilus with the stability of a minelab. This Tejon passes the test. It is ultra-light, stable, easy to use, deep and affordable. It’s just plain fun to use.”

“I’m not going to steer my fellow detectorists wrong on this one – trust me, this is a butt kicking machine in trained hands. It’s a no nonsense deep seeker. Not so much bells or whistles just power and enough features to find you old deep stuff. Don’t listen to this nonsense about it being too noisey or just average. Mine was the same way, until I read the manual. I have many detectors, by far the deepest of which is the Tejon. It wins the depth per dollar value HANDS DOWN. I get 10″ regularly on coin sized objects in the woods. I’m not one for exaggeration so I’m not going to give BS numbers like 15″ on a dime – expect 10″ give or take 1″. I’ve dug copper and lead BB’s (yes tiny BB’s) at 5″ in the ground that sound off like pop cans. Get this: I’ve detected bits of metal so small – that my pinpointer will not even pick them up. That is how sensitive this can be if run hot.
Now all that power is complemented useful features. The toggle dual disc. is an absolute joy to use. This feature alone makes this a must have detector. You can tell a wealth of information by setting the dual disc. in certain ways. You can also adjust the tone of the detector, which is kind of neat but not necessary. The ground balance is tricky at first, but once used to it – it’s quick work.
The 5.75″ coil gets nearly the same depth as the stock coil and is a must have. The 8″ coil is a take it or leave it for me. Now for a couple of negatives: your headphone cord WILL knock your ground balance knob around and cause you fits in the field. You will dig a few rusty square nails (remember they could be coins) Also, people will disagree with me, but mine seems to lose power with weak batteries – no kidding I can’t explain it.
If you dig old deep stuff, get one. These things go used for dirt cheap. Best value out there on a used detector. I’m a Tejon lifer as this is about as perfect a machine as I have seen. Until I see something better – this is a legend in my book.”

Tesoro Vaquero

The main part of the Vaquero’s versatility is its three and three-quarters manually adjusted ground balance. This will give the detectorist the power to set up his machine to best suit the mineralization conditions that he is working in and his personal treasure hunting style. The Vaquero adds an ED180 discrimination feature to filter the trash from the treasure and a Push Button Pinpoint that makes digging up the goodies that much easier. The discriminate knob is also used to switch into a threshold-based All Metal Mode.

“I just fell in love with this detector and I own a garrett GTAX 550, garrett ace 250, and a whites dfx but the vaquero destroyed them all I went back to my old detecting spots like the park and beach hear in avila beach,CA and got results. I found a mens superbowl(raiders) ring at 15″ inches deep with a clear noise. To make the story short I did returned the ring and I got a reward of 200 dollars for it because I believe I did the right decision. Besides the ring had the name of the original owner. This detector is so good it will want to make you scream YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAW!”

“I have used all of the high end TID detectors and wanted a non TID detector for relic hunting, after a lot of research I picked the Tesoro Vaquero.
The Vaquero weighs 2.2 lbs, it is like a walking stick with a search coil on the end of it, I can swing it all day with one arm and not get tired, it has one of the best discriminator that I have ever used and it is as deep as any detector on the market today, it runs off of 1 9-volt battery, and has a manual ground balance. I can turn it on and be hunting in less than one minute, and I don’t have to memorize a bunch of menues and sub menues, or study DVD’s to learn how to program it,the Vaquero has a very short learning curve, about one hour and you are good to go.”

Tesoro Cibola

The Cibola’s main search mode is an ED 180 Silent Search discriminate. A threshold-based All Metal is accessed by the Push Button Pinpoint mode. The ease of use for the Cibola makes it the perfect detector for both the metal detecting novice as well as the treasure hunter that has been around for a while.

“I am an intermediate level coin/ treasure hunter, and have spent about a week testing the Cibola. It is finding alot of coins that another detector I have had missed,, (and it aint no slouch),, The target seperation, and depth are super in the dry central Texas soil. I am positive the CIBOLA will pay for itself in a very short time. RUN to your nearest Tesoro dealer and get you one!!”

“I bought my like new Cibola last summer at a garage sale. The woman who sold it to me was really bitter at her ex husband who had left her for a much younger woman. She said he had used the detector one time and since then it had gathered dust in the garage and he didn’t take it when he moved out. You don’t care about this and I really didn’t either, but I let the woman vent and wound up getting this amazing detector (and accessories including a bag, digger, pouch and apron) for $50!
I’ve been detecting for a little over 3 years now, and it’s a rare week when I don’t get in at least 10 hours. I don’t claim to be an expert, but I feel like I’m getting pretty good at this.
When I bought my Cibola, my original intention was to use it a couple times to check it out and then sell it for a nice profit. New Cibolas go for over $300 so I knew I’d come out well. At the time I bought this I had 3 other detectors (and had sold off 2 others) and I couldn’t imagine using a detector without a visual ID.
But a funny thing happened the first time I used the Cibola. I found some really good stuff and was having some major fun. Without a screen to look at I discovered sounds and the more I use the Cibola the more I learn about its nuances. I’ve gotten to where before I dig (or don’t dig) I can call a pulltab of either type as well as a bottle cap or screw cap. With the Cibola, coins hit hard and make an unmistakable sound. It’s also a ring magnet – I’ve found 9 rings with it in about a year compared to 4 that I had found in the two years before with other detectors.
I’ve used Garrett, Minelab, and White’s as main detectors. I’ve found good stuff with them and they all had their good points, but since I invariably kept going to the Cibola and I’m not a wealthy person I went ahead and sold my other units a couple months ago and bought a small coil for my Cibola. I haven’t regretted my decision.
The Cibola is the lightest detector I’ve ever used. On those occasions when I’m able to get out for a full 8-10 hour day with my best buddy and hunting partner the lightness and ease of use is really appreciated. My buddy uses a Garrett GTI 2500 which is Garrett’s top of the line and a very good machine with tons of bells and whistles. Before I got the Cibola I considered getting one but at almost a thousand dollars the cost was prohibitive. He always found significantly more than I did until I got the Cibola and since then I’m actually slightly ahead of him!

The Cibola has the best trash separation and pinpointing of any detector I’ve ever used. I have the 8X9 stock coil and recently added the little 5.75 concentric coil which is not as deep as the stock but is absolutely amazing in trashy areas and tot lots.
As I’ve gotten more experienced with this unit, I’ve become more proficient at running the unit “hot” in older areas I detect with the sensitivity turned up to 10 or higher and the threshold turned way up too. This gives me a lot more chatter, but it also seriously increases the depth of this unit. If the area is too trashy or the ground too mineralized, I still have to turn it down. But in moderate to lightly trashy areas I crank it up. Doing it this way last weekend I made my deepest find yet. With the sensitivity just past 10 and the threshold most of the way up I got a light but repeatable signal that wouldn’t discriminate out. I supertuned the Cibola (turned the sensitivity and threshold all the way up) and the signal got stronger. As I kept digging deeper I kept prodding with my pinpointer and not getting any signal but when I waved my detector over the hole the signal stayed strong. When I got to about 9 inches I pushed down into the soft ground with the pinpointer and finally got a vibration. As I carefully kept digging I pulled out a 1928 Mercury dime at a measured and unexaggerated 10 inches! Although I got a quarter before with my Xterra at 10 inches, the Cibola is the only machine that has gotten me deeper than 8 inches on any coin smaller than a quarter. Admittedly, we had several inches of rain the week before so I’m sure that helped the Cibola get deeper. But a dime at 10 inches is impressive and says a whole lot about the surpringly deep power of this machine.
I would highly recommend this machine to anyone – newbie or experienced. They call detectors like this without an ID display “beep and dig” but that’s really a misnomer. This machine should be called a “beep and dig or don’t dig” machine because once you learn what this machine is telling you, you won’t be digging much trash unless you want to remove junk that is possibly masking good targets.
One more thing I love about this machine. I like to use a fast sweep speed and this machine handles that perfectly without missing anything. It has lightning fast recovery time.
I try to never say never, but short of another garage sale bargain for resale, I don’t see myself buying another detector for a long long time.”

Tesoro Compadre

The Tesoro Compadre was designed with the idea that less is more. This modest machine can do a lot of the same things that its bigger brothers can do. It works great for coin hunting, competition hunting and relic hunting, but it does it without any excess knobs. Switch on the detector and you’re working in a silent search, motion all metal mode. The farther you turn the knob, the more discrimination you can bring to bear on those trashy sites. The Compadre now comes standard with a 5.75″ round concentric coil. The depth is equivalent to the original 7″ concentric, plus the new coil reduces the likelihood of target masking in extremely trashy ground. It also gives you the ability to get into and around natural obstacles like bushes, fences, and playground equipment.
The Compadre has it all. One knob simplicity for the beginner and high gain circuitry and the famous Tesoro ED-180 discrimination for the advanced user. If one detector can do all of this, maybe less is more.
Operating Frequency 12 kHz
Searchcoil Type Round concentric, hardwired
Searchcoil Size 5.75″
Cable Length Approx. 3′
Audio Frequency Approx. 630 Hz
Audio Output 1 ½” speaker and headphone jack
Headphone Compatibility ¼” stereo plug
Weight (may vary slightly) 2.2 lbs
Battery Requirement One 9 Volt DC (alkaline)
Battery Life (typical) 10 to 20 hours
Operating Modes Silent Search Discriminate

“This has got to be the easiest and best metal detector to use. I bought this for the wife and 7 year old but will spend a lot more time with it myself. Plenty deep enough for most situations. I’ve used it in a trash infested park and it did great! Its deepest find so far…a 50 cent sized piece of aluminum 8 inches deep in my neighbors garden. Not bad tesoro.”

“Even after nearly 35 years of metal detecting, I still find myself looking back on the “good old days” when simplicity and fun was the name of the game in metal detecting. The Tesoro Compadre just may be Tesoro’s best kept secret when it comes to dollar value performance, and remains one of my first choices in a “grab-and-go” machine when I just want to go out to the local park or school to do a little coinshooting. Much like the simple detectors I remember from the 1960s, the Compadre is pure enjoyment to use, and even with its single knob design, leaves little to be desired for many uses in comparison to units costing several hundred dollars and more. The newer 5.75 inch coil version combines excellent target separation with good depth of detection, and weight and balance are as good as they get, topped off by Tesoro’s great lifetime warranty. Hard to beat for the money”

Tesoro Detectors – Gold

“I took my LST down the beach for the first time and the LST works fantastic in the dry sand. I was in all metal mode and pulled up some trash from good depths so I was happy with it’s performance, no goodies though However, when I went down on the wet sand I did have trouble getting the ground balance to settle, so I stuck to the dry sand.
Another time I did some coin hunting around the in-law’s farm and found it a very trashy site so I set the discrimination on. How I set my discrimation is to bury a 5 cent peice (Australia) a couple inches, and then adjust the discrimination to just accept the 5c coin. It should then reject most small iron and still pick-up all decimal and pre-decimal coins. On and off over a couple days I pulled out about 60 decimal and 2 pre-decimal coins……but we won’t talk about beer tops, my father-in-law didn’t mind a beer or three.
I must comment again on this detector having it’s own “language”. Now I’ve got some hours use under my belt, a lot of the time I can guess correctly what I’m going to dig up based on the sound. Pinpointing is excellent once you have a few hours practice.”

“I won’t go into a lot of detail here. Just want to point out that to this day, the Lobo ST remains one of the best offerings available from Tesoro.
There are detectors that will outperform it in some categories but as an all around machine the LST gets it done. Some say it has a language that will speak to you when you learn it but I never did “learn it” I can’t hear anything other than a beep on non-ferrous targets. One big plus I did find about the audio is that it is very distinctive on big heavy iron. If you relic hunt or hunt old logging camps, ID’ing large iron like axe heads ect is a snap with the LST. I like digging that kind of stuff and can tell it with a high degree of accuracy.”
